“I started to take photographs at the age of 6, when my father bought me a Kodak Brownie 44A for my birthday. Until a few years ago it was no more than a hobby, and I concentrated my efforts on careers in local government and then with the Halifax, where I worked in IT for over 19 years. My interest in photography was re-ignited when I bought my first digital camera, a Nikon D70. In 2006 I decided to take time out to study photography, starting a degree course in Contemporary Photographic Arts. I graduated summer 2009.

I specialised in landscape photography, using both film and digital media, and also have a strong interest in pinhole photography. I am a Licentiate of the British Institute of Professional Photography and also of the Royal Photographic Society. As a freelance I intend to not only continue in landscape photography, but also
to broaden the scope of my work to include editorial and PR work.”

As an international award winning animator and director, he brought joy to hundreds of students and businesses when he visited the College and WOW Hub to enlighten them on the fascinating subject of animation – and what life is really like in film and television…

In a modest and remarkable interview, Barry Purves spoke candidly about his experiences and achievements.

Speaking passionately about directing his elaborate and truly astonishing animated characters, Barry told the students: “I love animation – I’m passionate about it. Today I’d like to pass on the same passion and enthusiasm to you.”

Barry holds regular animation workshops in educational institutions across the world.  He works with all the major studios in America, including: DreamWorks, PDI and Pixar and acts as a jury member and advisor for many film festivals.  His films have won over sixty major international awards, including Grand Prix, Best Director, Best Film, OSCAR and BAFTA nominations.

Not content with being an award winning animator and director – Barry Purves is also the author behind ‘Stop Motion – Passion Process Performance’ – a personal book on animation and the creative process.  Following the success of the book, Barry is now in the process of writing the eagerly anticipated follow-up ‘Performing Animals’.

Barry also enjoys working on British projects and is well known for his work on renowned TV classics such as: Postman Pat, The Wind in the Willows, Rupert Bear and Danger Mouse.  Humbly Barry said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to play Toad in The Wind in the Willows, which is my favourite book.”

Capturing their imagination, he left students enthralled as he revealed what it was really like to work on the set of Hollywood blockbusters such as King Kong, Mars Attacks and advise animators on the set of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.  Barry explained:  “When you’re working on animation you have to accept that you could end up working for 9 months and at the end of it have a 12 second shot and that’s your contribution to the film.  To be an animator you have to realise that this 12 seconds is an achievement!  If you do want to work in animation, you will have to be content with those small chunks.”

Barry continued: “You need a mind that has the capacity for detail.” Barry laughed and added:  “I do have a very strange mind.  I probably couldn’t tell you who the Prime Minister, is but I could watch someone as they walked down the street and analyze how they moved, and be able to reproduce that.  You need to be really observant as an animator.  Animation isn’t about reproducing real life; it’s about finding the selective moment in a walk, that tells the story of a walk.  You need to emphasis that moment.”

Revealing more secrets to successful and convincing characters, Barry said: “Eyes are the most important thing about any character you design.  Whatever character it is, whether it’s a lump of plasticine or a really detailed character like Gollum in Lord of the Rings, the eyes are where you start. You can take away the mouth from a character, the nose, the ears and it will still work, but take away the eyes and that character is dead.”

Speaking about his experience of working with Hollywood Director Tim Burton, Barry said:  “I was there at the beginning of Mars Attacks to develop the stop motion.  I worked with Tim Burton to find the characters body language. When you design a character you always have to think, how is it going to move?  Tim Burton wanted these characters to be like really nasty little spoilt children who were high on sugar…so there’s an element of that in them.  I also incorporated a bird like movement in them, where they really flicked there heads.  The movement is quite sharp.”

When asked how he felt to work with Hollywood Director Peter Jackson, on the set of Hollywood Blockbuster King Kong, Barry replied:  I worked with Peter, helping to develop Kong’s body language.”  Barry laughed and added:  “What’s not to like about working in New Zealand, having a house on the beach and working with Peter Jackson on a big Hollywood film?  King Kong is my favourite film of all time.  It was fantastic to work on a character like Kong – It’s the joy of animation…. I felt extremely privileged to be there and contribute to the scenes.”

Barry’s work consistently dazzles and entertains audiences across the world. Critics have described his work as ‘technically remarkable and imaginatively astonishing.’ With a career that spans over 35 years, Barry has truly succeeded in suspending disbelief, with the creation of a memorable gallery of characters – perfecting the art of illusion!

The first event was dedicated to Art & Media and supported by WOW Hub project. The event was held on 9^th October 2009 from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm at the college’s Yorkshire Craft Centre and Henry Mitchell Hall.  Anyone could have attended and the day was packed with presentations, entertainment, business exhibits, seminars and workshops.

During the event, representatives from different organisations were available to offer information on self employment, starting up a business, skill and training opportunities. People also had the opportunity to speak to individuals from different types of businesses about their early days and benefit from various types of seminars and hands-on workshops.

The event was open at 9:45am by Doug Stott, Bradford College Finance Director, followed by a presentation by Curtis Jobling, our celebrity guest speaker. Curtis Jobling is an author and illustrator based in the UK.  Working in publishing and animation he is possibly most famously known as the designer of the BAFTA winning BBC show Bob The Builder, as well as creator of Frankenstein’s Cat. During the day, Curtis delivered two presentations for Bradford College students and local businesses and a workshop on creation of animated characters.

Animation Yorkshire - Bradford City Of Film

WOW Hub and Animated Yorkshire organised a special screening of Sounds Like Bradford, a new commission from Fabric and Bradford City of Film. The event was held at the Innovative Technologies Centre on Wednesday 24th June 2009.

Six artists created an animated soundscape of Bradford called Sounds like Bradford.   Animators involved in the project gave a short presentation and screening of their work. These included Rozi Fuller, Bill Beaumont of Distant Futures Ltd, and Zane Whittingham of Zoom Animation.

Gideon Seymour, the Director of Fabric and Kath Shackleton,  Animated Yorkshire talked about the initial idea behind the project and how it all came about.

It was a very enjoyable event with many pieces of animated work shown and lots of networking opportunities throughout the event.

Former NASA Astronaut Rhea Seddon Visits Bradford

Former NASA Astronaut Dr. Margaret Rhea Seddon came to visit Bradford on the 16th of June 2009 and WOW Hub had the opportunity to host two events for the local school children and their teachers to come and meet Dr Seddon. The event was held at the sports hall of the new Trinity Green Campus, Bradford College and over 20 locals schools from Bradford and Leeds attended.

Margaret Rhea Seddon (born November 8, 1947) is a physician and retired NASA astronaut. Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978, Dr. Seddon became an astronaut in August 1979. Her work at NASA has been in a variety of areas, including Orbiter and payload software, Space Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory, Flight Data File, Shuttle medical kit and checklist, launch and landing rescue helicopter physician, support crew member for STS-6, crew equipment, membership on NASA’s Aerospace Medical Advisory Committee, Technical Assistant to the Director of Flight Crew Operations, and Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM) in the Mission Control Center.

She was Assistant to the Director of Flight Crew Operations for Shuttle/Mir Payloads. A three-flight veteran with over 722 hours in space, Dr. Seddon was a mission specialist on STS-51D (1985) and STS-40 (1991), and was the payload commander on STS-58 (1993). In September 1996, she was detailed by NASA to Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee. She assisted in the preparation of cardiovascular experiments which flew aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on the Neurolab Spacelab flight in April 1998. Dr. Seddon retired from NASA in November 1997. She is now the assistant Chief Medical Officer of the Vanderbilt Medical Group in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr Seddon talked about her experience in space and experiments they undertook as part of their mission. She also spoke about her journey and hard work she has put into her career and her message to all school children was “You can do it to”.
